One of the most astonishing devices in it is how much of the novel is told by that woman to her dead daughter.

So she is in constant conversation in her own mind with her daughter who died.

And anyway, it's just an astonishing book that I really highly recommend.

The opening sequence, which kind of tells the first 18 years or so of this Muslim Balkan outlaw camel driver very quickly is,

is just one of the most astonishing feats of writing.

It's just that sentences kind of just keep tumbling and tumbling and tumbling.

It's not stream of consciousness, but it almost is because of how quickly the plot moves.

And it's sort of its own balletic section of the book, I guess, and then it kind of stops.

And from then on, it follows a more conventional rhythm, I suppose.

But that opening, if I was a teacher of creative writing, I would be getting my students to study it.

So that book's called Inland by Taya O'Brett.

Well, I've been in that position for only the last year or so and I have to say that in combination with having a newborn at home has put a dent in my ability to read.

So I'm one of those people who keeps lists of every book I read so I can kind of go back and refer and remember things

And I was looking at it this morning because I thought you might ask me about my reading lately.

I'm down to about 10% of what I was at a year ago.

But, you know, that's all part of life.

I'm going to get back on the reading train soon.

I have to say, I still keep a steady stream of books on the table next to my bed, so...

I think the best thing I read this year was a book called Butcher's Crossing.
