And this is, just to be clear, this has happened in real life, not in the world of the novel.
So if it is this kind of personalised political history as you describe it, albeit through the lens of fiction, is it also then a polemic?
Is he advocating for some kind of change?
In what way is it a weakness?
Because it gets in the way of its structure as a work of art and turns it into something else?
I remember reading once a similar criticism of George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia that some friends of his read the early manuscripts and said, you've put all this stuff in the middle that's just your opinion and it really ruins the whole book.
And Orwell sort of said, well, that might ruin the book, but I've got to put it in anyway.

Kate and Katie, the two of you have both read Simon Cleary's The War Artist.
Yes, I was going to say, you know, in a novel that obviously deals with PTSD, it's one of its central themes, both in the case of Phelan with his wartime experiences, but actually, as you say, also with Keira in her own life as a civilian.
And I was interested in the way that the tattoos figure kind of metaphorically as something to do with PTSD.
