And so in the last several decades, NASA, NOAA, the European Space Agency, the Japanese Space Agency, JAXA have worked together on this coordinated observing network from space.
And so we can measure things like sea surface temperature, wave height, salinity in the ocean, ocean color.
These are all things that we can sense using basic principles related to something called the electromagnetic spectrum.
You know, this cascading spectrum of ultraviolet, visible, infrared, microwave.
We can exploit those frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum to tell me something about the ocean or the planet.
So that's the primary way.
But we also have what we call in- situ measurements.
We have actual instruments in the
And so we can measure things like temperature.
We can measure things like sea spray and wind height and so forth.
We even have things like buoys and submersible observing systems that sort of temporarily plunge themselves beneath the water and take measurements before they come back up.
They're kind of like soundings or reverse soundings, you know, in in weather world or atmospheric sciences and meteorology.
We send weather balloons up to get a profile.
Of the atmospheric temperature.
We can profile the ocean too.
Of course, there are things like submersibles and sail drones.
So the message there that I would leave those excellent, and thank you all for the questions.
The message there is that we must have a robust observing system and network, whether that's funded by our federal stakeholders and in partnership with our global partners around the planet.
It's often not sort of in front of us.
You might say, well, why are we spending money on these sort of satellite systems that I know nothing about or that touch my lives directly?
