Nat Dunn's an absolute legend as well. I'm not sure if they're still writing partners, but they were writing partners back then, from what I understood. And I have this loop. It was funny. I wasn't really, like, tempo-oriented back then. Now I have to be mindful of tempo. You know what I mean?
Like, if it's 90, it's going to be some sort of, you know, trappy, twerk-esque, you know what I mean, drums. You know, happier, I would even call, like, twerk drums. You know what I mean? Because if you just strip all that out, it's just like...
it's almost like breakbeat or something it's like with like claps and all the stuff so but whatever it was like 95 with this loop and play it for her boom right then and there she's like talking about oh you know let's write a song about the guys people that can't take a hint you know like we're just friends like and me i'm the i'm like at this point i'm like totally removed from writing lyrics i'm like
yo, I'm just here for the music, you do your thing, you know? And artist writing is the best. I love writing with artists. Like, it's so different. Me and my, like, all my writing homies, or actually, like, my real homies, we always, like, joke, like, okay, guys, are we going to do a songwriting song or are we going to do an artist writing song? Because artists think differently.
They can get away with more, you know what I mean? Like, songwriters are like, well, we already said back, so we have to do it, but we can't write. I'm like, guys... Go listen to, like, Yellow Lead Better by Pearl Jam. There might be a few words. It's just mumbles, and they're, like, top of the charts. It's, like, this insane thing. Anyways, so Anne-Marie's writing artist style.
You know what I mean? She just has her homie writing.
crazy concept all this stuff and so we write that and i'm so tired i don't really understand what i have until the next morning and i'm on my laptop and we're running around all the promo and i'm making this song i'm so inspired like i'm making this song because at the time i i don't think i ever did like a 95 bpm marshmallow song you know what i mean maybe one um
Anyways, so I'm just, like, making this thing in the back of this van. Like, me and my day-to-day just traveling around London. And life then was, like, if somebody, like, took your head and just, like, shook it constantly, like, that's how, like, life felt back then. You can't really get a grip. You know where you are. You can kind of see, but you can't really, like, you know what I mean?
You can't really, like, just stop for a second and be like, oh, okay, this is what my life is going on. Just going, going, going, going. I didn't realize what I had until I got back to my apartment in North Hollywood. And I sit there and I hear friends with the drums that I put on and my laptop speakers, all this stuff. I'm like, okay, all right, something's here.
Spent that day and then it came down to the bridge. And this is like the perfect example of like how I was feeling about making music at the time.
You know, there's trap elements in Friends, but I got to the bridge, and I was like, wouldn't it be, like, funny if I did, like, this, like, West Coast, like, thing with the bow-wow and the on, like, the pitch bend on the, you know, like, little triangle or square, whatever wave that is. Um. And I did it because there's no rules. Like for me, I was like, I can do whatever I want.
And so I have this whole song with an acoustic guitar and trap drums and like horns in the chorus.
It's like, what's happening in this song? It's ridiculous. Uh, and then I was like, you know what, just double down West coast for no reason, West coast bridge. And everybody was like, my team was like, yes, we don't know why, but yes, that's why. And, uh, we did that. I did that. Maybe finish it that day.
I think that one, I chipped out a little bit longer, but no more than like a week or whatever. Um, Yeah. And so then I was like, yo, Anne-Marie, like, we're going to become friends. No pun intended. I was like, I know how promo goes. We're going to be doing this a lot. And we, you know, went and did promo around the world and got super close.

All right. All right. Happier is also just very just. Just like the universe, just like dropping things like in your lap. You know what I mean? I went, I decided to take a break, right? A break for me back then, a long break for me back then was like five days. And so I go to like Hawaii with my friends, whatever. We're all chilling there.
and, you know, we're partying a lot, and I come back into the room, take a breather, maybe take a shower, I forget what it was. I open my laptop, and there's a demo in my email from my manager. And my manager, you know, I never had a label, no A&R or anything.
So my manager, not every time, but he'll send a lot of stuff through, and then it'll click for him, and then it has to click for me, and then that's, you know what I mean? So I get to set this thing. He's like, hey, this sounds pretty cool. And it was happier, but nothing even remotely close to what you hear now.
