Nothing straightforward here, is it?
My mum's relationship with my grandmother was complicated because she wasn't her mother.
She was her aunt.
And grandpa was a civil servant in India.
And mum was born in Pakistan.
And then her mother, her and her sister, my aunt, their mother died very suddenly and unexpectedly.
And grandpa married his, had the sister sent out.
Well, why not?
But weirdly, in those days, the thing to do was when a child reached a certain age, you'd send it back to England with the ire, which they did.
But to England in the middle of the Second World War.
So the school in Essex was immediately evacuated to the Lake District on the edge of Lake Windermere.
And Mum loved it there.
The roads were empty.
You could toboggan down the lanes in the snow.
And her and her sister went up there.
Very small, about 120 pupils.
All boys?
