Well, I think you got a great summary.
I think it's just another example of sloppy, reckless, abusive and really fundamentally lawless behavior by this administration's Department of Justice.
And so they got the result that they did with a judge saying either withdraw these subpoenas or have them quashed.
Now, it's still possible that they'll come back again with new subpoenas, and I suspect that in the future they'll subpoena journalists' telephone calls, their emails, their texts.
They'll subpoena them seeking to compel testimony before grand juries in future instances because their intent here is to harass and really try to intimidate journalists.
Well, I'd never seen that before.
So that was really extraordinary and certainly uncalled for.
I don't think it was a mistake on their part.
I think it was entirely deliberate.
All of these things are really deliberate.
In fact, they were subpoenaing telephone calls that went back to the beginning of the year.
well before the New York Times actually published this story that's at issue here.
So clearly it was a broad subpoena, really an effort to try to fish for the sources of the New York Times reporters, and beyond that, to really try to intimidate the press.
And so, you know, it's just part of a campaign that's been going on for a long period of time, even in the first term.
Even in Trump's first term, toward the end of it, they sought texts and emails of Washington Post reporters, New York Times reporters, CNN reporters.
And they were very aggressive and they're even more aggressive now during the second term.
Well, I think that's exactly what they were trying to do, is that they were trying to find out who these reporter sources are.
They were trying to find not only the identities of their sources, but trying to intimidate their sources and to intimidate journalists overall.
And frankly, you know, to be quite honest,
direct about it.
