They try to do as much as they can to avoid it, which is part of one of the criteria for PTSD is avoidance of the stimulus.

First of all, know what the forecast is going to be and change your plans so that you're not outside when the thunderstorms are predicted.

Secondly, if you do have to be outside, know where your safe shelters are and how long it's going to take you to get there.
