First of all, the nerves that serve your hand, there's one cell that goes all the way from the tip of your finger all the way to your spinal cord.

Now, there's lots of these cells, but that one cell is only one cell long, okay?

Now, if you injure it at the wrist or the elbow or your armpit, your brain doesn't know where you injured it.

Okay.

It just goes, well, that cell goes to the end of my index finger.

So it must be my index finger that's hurting.

Okay.

So it has to do with the way the body's electronics are connected.

As to where you're going to think you feel the pain.

Now, it's really easy for us to think about sciatica.

We all know sciatica is because the nerve is getting squeezed by a disc in the spine.

It's the same kind of idea with phantom pain and pains otherwise.

It's damage to the nerve.

The brain interprets it perhaps incorrectly, but that's the way the brain interprets it.

So maybe you seem to have pain in an area that you didn't expect.

Unfortunately not.

And oh my gosh, I wish we did have something like that because, you know...

Doctors are used to patients coming in and unfortunately, you know, most people want to get back to work after they're injured.

And then there's a group of people that a very small number that don't think they should go to work and they should be supported for the rest of their lives.

Guess which of those groups doctors see the most of?
