Well, it's more the politics of the North than our own migration politics.
I was kind of taken aback during the week by not just the politicians in the UK, but also...
the press, the British press, and the way they were describing Ireland as a sort of backdoor to this migration coming into the UK.
And it was really presented as though people were, migrants were coming into Ireland just as an easy route sort of into the UK.
It seems to be somewhat the other way around.
So 90% of, and John Lee has this on the front page of the Daily Mail, or the Mail on Sunday.
You had it during the week yourself, yeah.
I was looking at the figures myself during the week.
So around... So let's say there were 8,500 international applications last year.
1,065 of those were made at the port of entry, so the airports or the ports or whatever.
That left 87.5%.
The majority of them were people turning up at the IP office in Dublin and...
You know, there's little known about how, you know, where they had been in the run up to that.
But the presumption made because they didn't arrive in through airports or ports and also anecdotal evidence, the Gardaí say, and people working in the system would say this, that 90% of people going for international protection in Ireland last year and so far this year, it's rising this year, came through the north, they came from the north.
Yeah, and actually Jim O'Callaghan did say it after the Rwanda policy
that it was you know there were more people coming from the north to the south now that could be turning but we don't we don't know what the figures are but ultimately because it's an open border it's very fluid migration between both and
The government here, nobody wants to put a passport checks at the border, like no one wants to go there.
So you'd wonder if it's a sort of inbuilt, you know, cost to not doing that.
