He's a really big part of the tale.

The intensity of his chase for that McLaren drive is such a great story.

And in some way, even at the time, it felt rare for how open he was being about the emotion around it as well and how much he wanted that at all costs.

It was quite soon afterwards he was talking about curling up in a ball in tears mid-season over the McLaren blowing up on the grid at Silverstone.

He was very hard on his sleeve in a way that I think was rare for particularly a non-Nigel Mansell British driver in that era.

I was a massive Brundle fan and maybe always expected a little bit more.

Like some of the good Ligier drives were so good.

I was really... I thought him going, reuniting with Eddie Jordan at last in F1 after their F3 times together would pay off really well in 96.

So I think as a driver, I had loads of high hopes for Brundle, loads of great underdog drives, but never really... There were also a lot of missed opportunities when maybe his performance wasn't there either.

I thought it was really sad that having got the McLaren drive and done okay with it, with some good races and some podiums,

OK, on paper, he gets dropped for Nigel Mansell.

In reality, he gets dropped for his mate, Mark Blandell, who wasn't as good as him because Mansell's there for two minutes, then goes.
