People wanted Williams to be the team taking the fight to Ferrari after its low patch.
It was fantastic to have Williams being the Ferrari challenger, having a personality and a racer like Montoya in the thick of that as well.
Even BMW is a newish engine manufacturer with an evocative history.
All the elements for this to be the title fight seemed so exciting.
And it's because...
The Michelin tyres often let Montoya qualify pretty well as the season went on.
Actually, with a few races mid-season where he'd be up front for a while, the tyres would turn to jelly and he'd do something stupid.
Yeah, he took loads of poles this season.
He did, yeah.
And I kept believing that those were going to be the breakthrough.
I was just not looking at the points, I guess.
But it really took till July before I truly gave up on this season as a contest.
Yeah, surely, especially because this seemed like the turnaround he needed after that awful, horrible 2001.
I think you went into 2002 thinking your days here are numbered.
There's this Fernando Alonso kid hanging around.
You're probably on your way out of this.
And it kind of restored his reputation almost immediately in 2002.
Even if Jensen wasn't necessarily feeling the kind of growing agony of near misses, I feel like the ITV coverage at the time had a real habit of, like, hyping up the near misses, ramming a Union Jack down your throat at the same time and just making it into a bigger and bigger thing that he still wasn't on the podium, still hadn't won a race.
So, yeah, at the time, my main thought was just, phew, actually, he can do this.
