And while they haven't converted enough of those chances...
a big reason for them getting them is Kovacic and how he's continually able to move them up the field, move them through the fences better than any other central midfielder.
He completes more passes in the final third than any Chelsea player, but the stat that really showcases value to them is Opta's ball carry stat, which is
when you move with the ball five meters or more.
And basically he does that far more than any midfield player, 29 times per 90 minutes.
And of all Premier League players, only Fernandinho playing at centre-back for Man City averages more.
And one of the reasons he so frequently got the ball is nobody can get it off him.
He's taking on opponents more than any central midfielder and behind just four or five players overall in the Premier League this season.
But when it comes to success rate, how often you're beating that man you're taking on, he's in a league of his own.
He beats a man 79% of the time he takes him on, which is the best ratio of any Premier League player to attempt meaningful amount of dribbles this season.
And yeah, that wasn't enough.
Add in the fact he's averaging more tackles per 90 minutes than Kante this season.
And he's at least two years younger than I thought he was.
It's still just 25.
Yeah.

yes uh yeah i mean as you say a goalkeeper averages three saves a game so it's hugely important to try and assess how good that save was whether it was from miles out or point blank range uh having a good safe center is still a good stat for a team it has got the the second highest in the premier league which is great for palace but it's not so good for assessing how important he's actually been towards that so for example alison has the best safe center in the premier league this season but
50% of his saves have come from shots outside the box, which is the highest ratio for a goalkeeper by some margin.
And it probably puts more of that save percentage stat down to the defence and the team in front of him and how much they've restricted attacks.
So that's where Opta's expected goals model comes in.
