Good morning, Claire.
So Jason Arday was forty one years old when he was found dead in his um home in South London at the weekend.
And um I think uh Friday in fact it was.
And I mean it's a tragically sad uh
thing because he leaves behind two children and a wife and
A you know, devoted following of friends and colleagues, but he'd also become a lightning rod.
In the kind of academic culture wars, or actually in the culture wars.
Per se ever since he became elected as the youngest black professor.
at Cambridge University.
He was teaching sociology.
He held a professorship for sociology, which made him one of the most eminent sociologists probably anywhere on the planet.
And more or less as soon as he got that position, people started, people especially on the right, the you know, right-wing academics who didn't like the fact that he was elevated to such a high position for one reason or another, started to look into his work.
And there were accusations of plagiarism around his PhD thesis.
I'm apologies, by the way, there's an airport announcement.
Um
But the I guess the point is that
Some people just couldn't stomach the idea that someone so young
with such an extraordinary life story, which I'll get to in a minute, would be elevated as much as he had been.
And then there were many people, friends of Jason Aldays, you know, members of the public, politicians, who thought that the way that
Um, his critics were kind of s you know, sifting through his record, frankly, amounted to a which and to which he may finally have succumbed.
