But in doing so, we can't simply allow the conversation to be pushed towards jeopardising and undermining the borderline.

That's happened for a very long time and they've had to deal with that.
I don't want to see that be a huge encumbrance for people of colour and I think many of them have had that as an encumbrance and have been screened effectively at different times.
But what it does give the lie to is the idea that there are no checks at all
Well, as always with these issues in communities, there are things that do simmer or exist for a long time and then are brought to the surface by grotesque individual events, like this appalling attempted murder the other night, which is then exploited by
external actors online or in politics in Britain or Musk or Tommy Robinson or whomever but there are issues that exist within these communities that are where there are vulnerabilities if we're talking about the disorder last night some of the there are
clearly issues in some of those communities around lack of opportunity, frustration with the political system, some of the same issues that have existed for a very long time and some of them have particularly existed within loyalist communities.
There have also been unaddressed tendencies towards extremism which haven't been addressed.
Of course people in those communities, like any other community, are entitled to have views and even strong views about immigration.
Even if I disagree with them, they're not illegitimate, but I think what we saw last night was
something of a new order.
We saw some of this last year in Ballymena and elsewhere, a town near Belfast.
We saw some of it two years ago, but last night we had really racist pogroms, attempted pogroms on the streets of Belfast, and I had to help move some of my constituents and find them shelter.
It really was quite serious.
You would describe them as pogroms, what we saw.
I'd say they were certainly attempted pogroms.
