Well, the first one is that if you look back over the last ten years, and what's interesting here is just how quickly the national debt has increased more than doubling in just a ten year period.
In the first two years of the COVID 19 pandemic, both President Trump in his first term, in the in like the waning years of his first term, and President Biden in his new term both ramped up spending quite tremendously.
tremendously in response, both in providing preparedness and dealing with the pandemic, but also in terms of stimulus for the economy as well.
That accounts for about a third of the increase in the national debt.
The bigger and more important reason why we've seen the debt explode so much is because of the federal budget deficit.
Essentially it means that the U.S.
government is spending more than it brings in in terms of tax receipts.
seats.
We have had a federal deficit in the US for the past quarter of a century.
It's interesting you say that because when he came into office he talked about wanting to reduce federal spending by about a trillion dollars, and so far that hasn't really come to light despite efforts by you know the Department of Government Efficiency that was led by initially by Elon Musk.
A few things here.
One, we've had the war in Iran.
That's forced the country to spend more on kind of military in dealing with that.
Two, President Trump made a
A centerpiece of his administration that he would impose tariffs on other countries to kind of reduce the um the trade deficit, that the U.S.
was buying too much from outside countries, but also to bring in tax revenues.
And that hasn't really come to pass because the U.S.
government has had to refund and return that money after a Supreme Court ruling.
The other thing is that with the war in Iran, we've seen how
higher prices in the US because of inflation or energy prices I should say.
