And to some extent, that was true.

But in fact, moving from town to town, he never had a lot of close friends when he was a kid.

He never stayed in one school long enough, and he always had this terrible secret of his father's drinking to protect.

And so he kind of erected this mental enclosure around himself and kind of walled himself off from other people.

Later on, even his wife, Nancy, was probably the person closest to him in the world so that there were parts of him even she didn't have access to.

And so he became kind of this outwardly friendly, but in fact, very distant, remote person.

And one of his longtime political consultants, Sue Spencer, told me Reagan would have made a pretty good hermit.

He didn't really need anybody.

He was very self-sufficient.

Again, that was really a product of his very difficult childhood.

Absolutely.

And remember, he graduated from tiny little Eureka College in 1932, which was in the midst of the worst economic downturn in American history.

Something like 20% of the country was unemployed.

So it was about as dire a condition as you could possibly imagine.

His own father was basically unemployed at that point.

So they were feeling the distress too.

He barely had enough money to pay for college.

you know, difficult childhood.

And yet he was convinced that he was destined for greater things.
