Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero had planned a putsch or coup two years earlier to reverse Spain's transition to democracy. But the plan had been discovered and Tejero was jailed for seven months. And I thought in my country that it was terrible to go back again to the dictatorship and to the military regime. So at the beginning was this feeling that the democratic process was stopped by this coup d'etat.

And also that your life was possibly in danger? Well, this was not sure at the beginning. Indeed it was a possibility to be killed by these guys. There was a very, very terrible moment when, I don't know, 15, 20 minutes after they invaded, they called for the main political leaders and they brought them to a different room. And we were not at all aware of what has happened with them.

The initial moments of the coup were caught in a radio broadcast, but soon the station was taken over by the civil guard and ordered to play military music. The 350 MPs were now hostages.
