The invasion puts intense pressure on food supplies, but Dorothy's family avoid hunger by growing their own vegetables and hunting wild boar.

Then in December 1943, the family moved to another rubber plantation.

After several months, Japanese soldiers stopped visiting and they suspect the war is coming to an end.

How did you know that the war had finished?

Because we never saw even a single Japanese for a while.

Malay men used to go to shops and coffee shops and so on and they came back and said that the war is ending.

There are no Japanese around us either.

So we gathered then.

I didn't even think about it maybe.

I just took it that they meant times are going to be better now.

But things don't improve for Dorothy's family.

In fact, at the end of the war, they get worse.
