The Olympic Games punctuate life in the swimwear industry, the occasion where new products can be launched in front of a global audience. Jason started just after the 2004 Athens Games, and Speedos swimsuit, the FS2, hadn't exactly made a splash.

The FS2, I think I can say, wasn't the same bang that the Fast Skinner 2000 made. And so it really was a kind of race from when I started in May 2005 to have a suit fully developed and ready for the Olympics in August 2008. And in fact, the trials began at the beginning of 2008. So you really, it was a kind of sprint for two and a half years to get something completely developed by then.

The characters still use rotary telephones. They don't have things like air conditioning or microwaves, so you may have a feeling of strangeness when you watch it. What people love about it is the closeness of the family.

They get most envious when they watch the scenes where everybody gets together to have a meal. We don't have such scenes in current families. People eat separately these days. But in Sazai-san, the whole family gets together and sits around that little round table called Chabudai and eats meals in a warm atmosphere. Shonichi has since written thousands of episodes of Sazai-san, but it wasn't a smooth start.
