And who deserves gentleness um, particularly in such vulnerable moments, is a a huge thing 'cause there's a hugely stark difference between the death of a deer and the death of her mother.
Um which is not a spoiler 'cause 'cause it says that she's dead in like this first sentence.

And the way that she participates in her mother's death and the way that she participates in the deer's death are very, very, very different.
And it says a lot about her.
as a person and also I think how she thinks about herself too, because she says, you know, all things deserve gentleness and the end, but her mother's end is very decidedly not gentle.
It's violent and chaotic and scary and it haunts her.
Um, but the fact that she has the capacity to
mourn this deeply.
for an animal on the side of the road, I think
really sets a a precedent for
her capacity for goodness and her earnestness and her desire to
be that gentle thing in moments of of dire emptiness and, you know, at at the very end of this innocent creature's life who's just been left.
And I mean there is something to be said too about a deer is hit and left on the side of the road and Caro is very much battered and abandoned too in her own way throughout the course of the book.
