On Monday morning, we reported that Mark Skinner and Manchester United had agreed to mutually terminate his contract as Manchester United women's head coach.
This comes after just a really difficult summer and a really difficult year for Manchester United women.
So Skinner was heading into the final year of his contract.
He's been at the club for five years.
He's led them through some ups, some downs.
They made it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League last season, which was exciting, but they failed to make Champions League for the upcoming season.
And there was quite a lot of uncertainty around the investment into Manchester United women.
It was a point of contention and a point of criticism that Skinner raised throughout last season was that they needed to invest in order to stay competitive online.
with the people around them in the WSL, including Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester City.
This summer, United have only made two signings.
It was a backup goalkeeper and a defender who came in on a free transfer.
They have sold a lot of players, including Melvin Mallard, their forward, to rivals Chelsea for £850,000.
It's a club record fee, but again, you're losing players and you're not necessarily replacing them.
And yeah, internally, there was quite a lot of strife around that point of investment this summer.
And it sort of culminated into this moment for Mark Skinner to leave, as he was told and the team were told by a board member last Monday.
that the club were going to be running on a sustainable model of investment, and that they intended to bring in academy players, return to the DNA of Manchester United.
There's only intention to bring in two more players this summer.
So lots of uncertainty at Manchester United heading into the new season.
Apparently the budget is roughly sixth or seventh lowest in the WSL.
It's not the place that Manchester United fans or the women's team really want to be.
