There really needs to be very strict guidelines with real teeth.
And the place you've got to look to that's analogous is what goes on with corporate CEOs that are publicly traded.
If you're a publicly traded CEO or executive and you engage in insider trading, because of the SEC rules, because of Sarbanes-Oxley, the penalties can range between 20 and 25 years in jail.
There's disgorgement of profit.
There's fines that can be up to $5 million and then fines on the corporation.
Those laws have teeth.
And as a result, you see those people behave because they have to, because the consequences are dire.
On the politician side, even just looking at Congress, if you fail to be in compliance with the 2012 Stock Act, and compliance means you have to announce the trade within 30 to 45 days, right?
You're paying a couple hundred, a couple thousand dollar fine.
You get a slap on the wrist.
And so maybe we should take that and say, look, we don't like what he's doing.
We're all uncomfortable.
It's on the headline of every major paper in the country and around the world.
But let's change that.
Let's use that as an opportunity so that the next president or the next people in Congress, they can't do this.
