And I'm in California.
I'm working on a big project that tries to bring virtue ethics into debates about artificial intelligence.
And
I will sometimes be out in these meetings here in the Bay Area and I'll tell people, I'll like ride into town saying, oh, hey, I'm the virtue ethics philosopher here to help you have a conversation about what kind of world we want to build with artificial intelligence.
Oh, you know what?
I sometimes tell these stories about crazy things people tell me.
I was at a meeting a few weeks ago where somebody told me, you know, there are only 300 people on planet Earth who matter anymore.
And they're the people who are making frontier models.
And I was like, I think you need to touch grass, as my students say.
You've totally lost your sense of perspective and reality.
For every person that kind of tells me something like that,
Actually, most of the folks I find out here, they're idea people.
They're curious about philosophy.
They're curious about religious questions.
They're fun to talk to.
They realize that we are living through a pretty crazy episode in human civilization, right?
When, you know, 10 years ago, if I'd asked a philosophy student, what makes humans different from animals?
Like, what's special about being a human being?
