Pulling into Senator Ted Kennedy's office, I felt this was appropriate.

Two of his brothers had been murdered.

It was fitting that he be next.

I went to his office.

I stood outside the door, gun in hand, and then I didn't go in.

I suddenly felt nothing.

It was like I was killing just to kill.

I wasn't going to do that.

I wasn't going to tee off and kill someone just because they were known.

This wasn't a grand enough gesture.

If I'd set out to kill the president, that's what I was going to do.

Is that an accurate recitation of how it went down that day, John?

So, I mean, it's potentially just sheer luck that Ted Kennedy lived beyond that day.

But I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States.

Was there any piece of you, John, who looked at President Reagan and said, he seems like such a nice guy, he's jolly, he's loved by his family.

Does the person's humanity ever sink in there?
