And so it's important to remember that when we talk about echolalia or scripting, they often carry emotion.
They carry memory and they carry context.
Whether or not that's always clear to us, it's usually clear to them.
And if we can start looking beyond the surface and really looking into these phrases, they are windows into the child's inner world.
And it's my belief that our job as professionals, or even if you're a parent of a child who uses echolalia, for us to presume competence and believe it's not just meaningless and random, but there is a meaning that I don't know yet.
And I think it's our job to put on our detective hat and try to find the meaning and
And that is the first step when we're talking about moving past echolalia to more like self-generated communication is understanding their intention so that then you can model the phrase that has the same sentiment.
Right.
So for Andy, when he would say vampires, Halloween, Nightmare Before Christmas.
I started validating him.
And I would say, you know, oh, it seems to me like you're nervous.
You know, you can say, I'm nervous.
And he picked up on that immediately.
And after only a few times of modeling that, he would just tell me he was nervous.
And then one time, I'll never forget, he followed it up.
