I started up the fishing dock, which creaked and groaned with each step.

The brown-haired girl.

Bound and gagged in a bolted-down chair, her forehead knotted and bruised, hair crusted with blood, brutalized face lulling limply on her slender neck.

She couldn't have been a day over nineteen.

And my brother.
