The risk you face is that when both sets of goods are down there, the other party takes both of them and disappears.
What happened gradually as history developed was that people started to trust each other enough to forego the temptation of taking all the goods and running away and just taking the ones offered by the others so that the game would be played again another day.

When banks were frightened to lend to each other and others and the economy trembled, it was partly because they didn't trust other people's balance sheets.
Account balance, yes please.
But the odd thing is that usually they do.
Looks about right, more's the pity.
We let strangers into our homes just because they wear the gas company's badge.
Will the taxi driver at a foreign airport fleece me?
Maybe, but probably not much, even though I'll never see him again.
The idea here is that trade somehow helps us behave, usually.
And if you don't, you won't be long in business or out of jail.
But surely people have moral notions of their own, not forced on them by economics like fairness.
