You've got to feel sorry for the tourists who come to my adopted home.
The Japanese island of Okinawa.
Seduced by pictures of azure seas, coral reefs and sunshine,
They arrive only to find it's chucking it down.
An island about the size of Monahan, four hundred miles south of mainland Japan.
Okinawa is sold as a subtropical paradise.
Japan's answer to Hawaii.
And it does indeed boast many beautiful beaches.
But what the brochures fail to mention is a rainy season.
That arrives in early summer and lingers for about six weeks.
The typhoons that follow hot on its heels are
can hit any time until late November.
They too bring down pours and, as you'd expect,
Ferocious winds.
Tourists aren't the only ones to be taken unawares by Okinawa's capricious weather?
Sixteen years ago it was me that was perplexed.
We just moved here from rural county Derry, where a short time earlier, I'd bought our forever home, or so I thought.
It was up a quiet lane with glorious views of the Spuran Mountains.
When you could see them.
And that was part of the problem.
