After a tour of Dr. Karyuki's lab to learn about the science behind geothermal, I head out to see how the industry is harnessing that energy.
I'm visiting a power plant run by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company, better known as Kenjen, in Olkaria, about 130 kilometers northwest of Nairobi.
I'm in a fairly large enclosure, and as I look around me, I see a stack of what looks like large warehouses with pipes running from one building to another.
I also see steam billowing out from the tops of some of these structures.
Well, standing next to me here is Victor Otieno, who works as a geologist at Kenjin.

Kenjin is enhancing its capacity through ongoing investments in new geothermal projects.
The company is also currently setting up an industrial park that has been built in the local media as Africa's first geothermal-powered city.
The industrial park will provide commercial and recreational facilities.
Kenjen is a state-owned corporation.
But is geothermal energy production an attractive prospect to the private sector?
Dr. Jo Kiru, an economics lecturer at the University of Nairobi, believes it is.
Kenya's Ministry of Energy says it expects independent power producers to provide affordable power, while recognising that these producers rely on consistent and predictable government policies.
But how can the financial potential of a country's energy sources be worked out?
How does Kenya's success in geothermal energy position it economically in the East African region, the African continent and the world?
