Critics of the country's military government have accused it of clamping down on political opposition and suppressing civil rights.

In a statement posted on social media, the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, has described the conditions faced by those who have fled the fighting in eastern Congo as terrible.

The agency warns that there is not enough food and water to cater for those who have fled, citing that they are also facing inadequate shelter and health care provision.

Fighting in eastern Congo between the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels and Congolese forces has been going on for decades now.

In mid-December, the UN warned that within a period of two weeks, over 84,000 people had fled to neighboring Burundi, overwhelming reception sites that had been set up to provide assistance.

The army officers appeared on the country's national television station on Wednesday and said they had ousted President Umaru Mbalo and had shut the country's borders.

Mbalo had been vying for a second term in office during last weekend's presidential elections.

The country's electoral commission was due to release the provisional poll results today.

Earlier on Wednesday, gunfire was reported in parts of the country's capital, Bissau.

The United States Mission to Guinea-Bissau issued a security advisory calling on U.S.

citizens in the country to seek secure shelter.

The African Union and West African Regional Bloc ECOWAS issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over the coup announcement.

Guinea-Bissau has witnessed continued political turmoil.

There have been several coups in the country since it gained independence over five decades ago.

Ryla Odinga was buried today in his rural home in western Kenya in a ceremony attended by thousands, including the country's president, William Ruto, as well as dignitaries from various African nations.

Sunday's burial event marked the last in a series of funeral ceremonies held for Odinga,

some of which turned deadly.
