Climate doomism, this idea that it's spinning out of control, there's nothing we can do about it, it's too late.
And that's not helpful, first of all, because if you really believe it's too late to do anything, then why do anything?

And so the reality is we are seeing dire climate impacts already.
We are not going to avoid
dangerous climate change because it's here.
It's here already.

So the question is, how bad are we willing to let it get?
And the good news, if there's some good news, is that the science increasingly tells us that there really is an immediate and direct consequence of our efforts to decarbonize our world.
And the warming of the planet basically stops when we stop putting carbon pollution into the atmosphere.
We didn't think that was true, say, a decade and a half ago.
The best science at that time indicated that
so-called thermal inertia of the oceans would dominate the oceans would continue to warm up sort of like a you know if you you know if you slam the brakes on a locomotive it doesn't come to an immediate halt it could go half a mile down the tracks before it stops um we used to think that the climate system was dominated by
by the thermal inertia of the oceans and it and and that is an important factor but the factor we weren't taking into account because our models were incomplete was the role that the oceans and the terrestrial biosphere plants basically vegetation play in taking carbon out of the atmosphere so when we stop putting it into the atmosphere those levels of carbon dioxide start to come down as those systems are pulling it out of the atmosphere and that sort of offsets
the thermal inertia effect, and what you get basically is a flat line.
If you stop adding any CO2 to the atmosphere, so if emissions have to go to zero, then it stops warming up.
