There are restrictions, though, on how many of those bonds you can actually buy in a year.
Professionals say that it's not really a good idea to just kind of change your spending patterns week by week or day by day based on whatever the stock market is doing.
That's not going to give you a very good result over a long period of time.
Well, there are some experts that believe that the big gains in the market that we saw back in the 2019 to 2021 period may have stolen some of the gains from the future.
And so you can't really be quite as optimistic about what the stock market's going to do in the next 5 to 10 years, they would say.
Interest rates are going to be a little bit higher, at least in the near term.
There are other uncertainties about how the market could perform.
So I think people really need to temper their expectations a little bit for the stock market's performance in the future.
Vanguard uses computer modeling to look at the future performance of different asset groups.
Of course, this is just projections.
This is not a guarantee of what's going to happen in the market.
But based on expectations for interest rates, inflation, other potential headwinds that the markets could face,
they're projecting really U.S.
stock gains of only around 3% to 5% annually every year over the next decade.
And that would compare to an increase of about 27% last year in the S&P 500 index.
So if that proves to be true, it really could make a big difference in terms of how people's retirement savings might perform.
