It was basically like the situation is difficult.
It is a challenge.
you when you're like oh i really want that donut or like i really want to quit working and go goof off like those are situations where you know there's something that's challenging you that's pushing you but the more you can exercise these virtues the better you're going to feel both in the moment and then habitually it becomes a more is there a point where a virtue could tip too far and stop someone from having a good sense of well-being like if they're too patient or they're too self-controlled
Yeah, it's a great question.
I mean, it sort of depends on how you want to use the term, right?
So there's a way of talking about each of these things that we might call virtues, where we mean it in a kind of like purely descriptive way, where you could be like compassionate to a fault or like too patient.
But then some people argue that like, if that's really what you mean, then you're not talking about a virtue anymore.
actually talking about some sort of purely descriptive trait of a person that can be misused but in a lot of philosophical traditions about thinking about virtue um the way virtues are defined like you can't you can't have too much of it right because it is the thing that is the proper balance right so this is you know famously associated with aristotle he has this doctrine of the mean where say like courage is not just
always facing any danger and under any circumstances, you know, like you can't have too much courage because what courage is is this kind of delicate balance that you're striking between fear, timidity, cowardice on one side, and you're trying to avoid that, but also recklessness on the other.
And you're sort of, you're finding that happy medium in between.
So if that's what you mean, then yeah, you couldn't have too much of it.
But on the other hand, you might think that the sort of like descriptive trait that like a psychologist might normally study is the sort of thing that could go too far.
Or like with patients, right?
Like if you're just always waiting and you never actually...
you know, seize the opportunity when the time is ripe.
Is that really patience?
Like you're just sitting around doing nothing.
it's tricky and and you know classically a lot of the the recommendations for developing virtues have to do with what we call habituation it's just practice it's like learning to like a new skill or something else you just have to keep practicing and trying
Same.
Thanks, David.
