His idea?
No, it was his idea.
The origin story is that this grew out of PayPal.
PayPal had run into serious trouble with fraudsters and they designed some anti-fraud algorithms that ultimately saved the business.
Again, pattern recognition software, finding those needles in the haystack.
They were generating a massive amount of data
Human analysts at PayPal couldn't figure out what's going on, so they developed software that could do that.
After 9-11, it occurs to Thiel at some point, you know, that same idea could be applied to the war on terrorism.
And those anti-fraud algorithms could perhaps be repurposed to help intelligence analysts find potential terrorists and prevent future attacks.
And that gave rise to Palantir.
So it was his idea.
He brought Carp into Palantir, first to help raise money for this startup company, and then in consultation with the other co-founders, brought him in as CEO.
But it was Carp who, from that point on, ran it.
So these things can be put to all sorts of uses.
And that's why a lot of the discussion about Palantir is tricky.
And part of what I've been trying to do in talking about the book is to get across the point that this is a really complicated company.
And because they're doing good stuff in some areas.
