And then I was also doing speech and debate.

Oh, my.

And I was doing a poetry reading at this competition of a poem that I was quite certain was serious, tragic even.

And I was reading it as dramatically as I possibly could.

And they kept laughing.

Shit.

Not like he's bad, but like he's amusing me.

There was like something about the way I spoke that was amusing this audience.

And then I was like, wait a minute.

Is that what they think?

Is this inflection what they think is funny?

Is this pause?

And I started to lean into it and just got more.

And it just like became riotous.

They thought it was the funniest poem they'd ever heard.

And I won.

I ended up winning the state competition.

And that's when I was like, okay, I'm not gonna be a teacher anymore.

I'm not gonna be a teacher.

I was like, I'm gonna go get laughs.
