I'd like to say that this is in isolation of other things like Ukraine war policy and so on, but probably it's not.

Trump is desperate to do a deal with the Russians.

No, it was to do two things.
One, and then the New York Times got this right, to to tell the Russians, look, the war is not going well for you.
Your economy is even worse.
Now is the time to wrap it up.
Let's let's make a deal.
And then two.
By the way, we know that as a result of the war not going well for you, you're doing a lot of other provocative things like escalating your state-sponsored terrorism campaign all throughout Europe, sabotage operations.
