And so as high energy and dramatic objects neutron stars are, you better believe they are.

And the whole magnetic field of the earth was ringing like a bell for a while.

This is all real.

And we traced it back to a neutron star that we think is about 50,000 light years away.

The neutron star had a little bit of a bad day.

The crust, we think, shifted by about a centimeter.

And that gave off so much energy that 50,000 light years away, it blew off a bunch of our atmosphere.

These are intense things.

Yeah, I know.

It keeps you up at night, doesn't it?

I mean, who cares about asteroids, right?

I mean, killer asteroids.

No, I mean, these blasts of high-energy radiation from neutron stars, some people think that may limit the age of civilizations in the galaxy.

Eventually, we all get hit by one.
