Is there such a thing as balance?
I never talk about balance because balance implies one in, one out.
I talk about harmony.
So I think a bit more like a spider's web.
Spider's webs change shape over time based on the environment that's happening around them.
When it's first built, it's beautifully symmetrical usually, but then the environment changes shape.
So it's never as simple as work and life.
Because in work, there's all sorts of other things, and in life, there's all sorts of other things.
So I quite like the metaphor of a spider's web that has multiple points, and it's about harmony.
As long as the spider's web works, I'm less worried about one in, one out.
So I think about, right, there are times where I've had to compromise my sleep, if you like, or my time with my family.
And I just do that in a way that maintains harmony for myself and for them, but also enables me to think that actually this has got to be sustainable.
So if you say I've put two more hours into the business, a bit less sleep, a bit less exercise, less time with the whānau, yeah, okay, can you do that for the next 10 years, Dave?
And if you can't or the consequences are such that you feel you don't want to, then you've got to rethink your formula.
I learned that 25 years ago.
That really helped me.
