And all of a sudden the ROI on them is phenomenal, right?

And so what we're seeing, you know, a lot of people that were struck by Cyclone Gabrielle or down here in Christchurch or, you know, Southland or up in Northland where the power cuts have been really bad, that's where we're seeing a lot of batteries start to come into play.

But it's very hard to economically model resilience.

Exactly.

And so my mum, for example, she's been weighing this up.

She's finally getting solar on her roof.

She's not going to go with a battery yet.

But the other thing is there is new technology on the horizon where it won't be too long before potentially that electric vehicle that you purchased is essentially just a giant battery on wheels anyway, and that might be able to power your home in those emergencies.

So it gives you a bit of an understanding of where the technology is going.

I don't think there's any right or wrong answer about

installing batteries at the moment.

Will they pay for themselves over their lifetime?

Probably.

And so therefore, it really comes down to what are the goals of these kinds of upgrades to your home and is resilience something that is a high motivator for you?

Yeah, and your listeners might have heard about something called Zero Bills Homes, and this is all totally achievable in New Zealand now, which is essentially when you finance solar and batteries, you eliminate the annual bill entirely.

Now, eliminating the annual bill is great.

We must remember, of course, that in June, July, August, when we're not generating as much solar and we're using a lot of energy, especially to heat our homes, the chances are you'll have power bills in winter.

But often those power bills can be completely cleared by the credits that you build up over summer and spring and autumn.

So that gives you a good understanding there of the way that I think we need to think about these things moving forward.

If power bills were annually and not monthly, people would realize just how amazing solar truly is.
