Given this narrow win that we saw this week, do you think that changes the calculus for Al-Sayed in the general election?
I think it does.
You already saw him pivoting a little bit more towards moderation heading into this election.
But I think he was hoping that he would be emerging from this as the progressive hope of this country, of showing that progressivism can win big in a swing state.
And instead, he's heading, you know, less than three months into a general election, barely eking out a win.
Michigan is not New York.
Michigan is not deep blue Colorado.
Michigan is a place where Alyssa Slotkin only won by about 20,000 votes in 2024.
This is going to be a much, much tougher race than even this uphill climb of a primary.
Let's talk about the Republican side of this.
President Trump has been kind of pitching the results as good for Republicans, these progressive wins.
What are we hearing more broadly from the Republican side?
Mike Rogers and Donald Trump made it no secret heading into this primary that they wanted to face off with Al-Sayed.
They thought that his more progressive policy stances, you know, his past records of sort of more extreme stances like defund the police, which he now says he doesn't believe in, and even his things he still believes in, like Medicare for All, are going to be turnoffs to swing voters in a state like Michigan.
It's also taken on a little bit of an ugly tone with a lot of attacks focusing on El-Sayed's faith and ethnic background, which could turn off voters in a state with a very big Arab-American and Muslim population.
OK, Diana, let's widen out here and just talk about some of the other elections.
What really stuck out to you as you were tracking all this?
I know we said we've talked a lot about Michigan, but my race that I am the most fascinated in is also in Michigan.
But this is a race that no one had on their radar, that no one saw coming.
