Mark, I want to uh first of all talk about your fabulous reporting on Sal Stewart and the contract talks that at least had been mentioned uh in passing uh between the organization and the uh Cincinnati Star rookie player, the rookie infielder.
Uh, want to get your impression of what you thought in speaking briefly with uh Nick Kral and then speaking with Sal Stewart and your thoughts on the possibility of the Reds executing a deal that several other teams and franchises have pursued with their young stars.
Indeed.
And you know, there are two ways to look at this, Mark.
And one one way is to say Sal Stewart is an obvious star of the future, a building block, uh, foundation block for the Reds going forward.
He certainly had a terrific end of the season last year in the final uh month of the season as the Reds made their playoff push uh and qualified for the postseason.
And then certainly
He opened like a ball of fire this year, setting all sorts of Reds rookie marks for the month of March, April.
And he's played in all 61 games or did going into the weekend, mostly at first base, but also at third and second, batting 258.
But more significantly, an 818 OPS.
He leads the club in all NL rookies, which was
Obviously his start couldn't have been much better, but there is a cautionary tale.
And maybe it's too early, Mark, to bring this up, but there's the tale of his teammate Matt McClain.
I think if you took a look at Matt McClane's start with the Cincinnati Reds, you could almost feel the same way about Matt McClain that a lot of people feel about Sal Stewart right now.
Do you agree with that?
Are the Reds looking at a parameter or at a uh structure similar to the ones that uh I think you mentioned the Tigers signing um their leading American League Rookie of the Year candidate, Kevin McGonagall, eight years, $150 million.
Pirates in a well documented, uh, well um certainly talked about uh deal consequences.
