It's quite interesting and it's not clear.
There are two ways to interpret this.
One is perhaps a lack of coordination within the government because China does have a tradition of complying with sanctions.
And the directive earlier to ignore the sanctions came from the Ministry of Commerce, whereas this directive to the banks to review their dealings with the Chinese refiners and to hold any new loans, that came from the banking regulator.
Well, obviously, this is a high profile case that is sending a warning message in some ways as well to the rest of Hong Kong citizens that China will not tolerate any form of subversion, right?
But it's interesting because the potential sentence could have been up to life in prison.
So Jimmy Lai didn't get the maximum sentence that he could have gotten.
But again, considering his old age, 20 years is not a light sentence as well.
