She's had some injury through some other method or another, or she's just quite sick and sort of struggling.

struggling, I think, metabolically to manage her normal day to day activities.

But the vast majority of these cases happen around carbon when cows are sort of under real pressure, transitioning from a dry cow to peat milk production is quite a significant energy strain.

The Dairy NZ data that we've collected over the years indicates that around one and a half to three percent of cows is considered relatively normal.

We would normally say that you should try and find a system that works for your farm, but we recommend introducing a pattern of two.

So two percent or more cows going down, two down cows in one day, obviously tailor that to your farm size.

A little bit.

Down cows two days in a row or not improving within two hours of treatment.

So yeah, trying to sort of find a consistent rule that works for your farm, but a rule of two is a is a generally pretty good rule of thumb.

So as you mentioned before, we talked to uh in uh greater detail about this in a long podcast in episode eighty two.

And we've also got a really good episode episode one twenty seven, which talks a lot more about the transition cow management and diet and metabolics associated with that.

So both of those are really good listens.

We've got some good info on our Dairy N Z website, all about sort of down cows and transition management and how to manage them, uh, which we've recently updated.

Those are great start points.

So first thing I'll say is having a good farm plan that everyone's consistent and everyone knows about is a really, really good first step.

So in your sort of off season dry cow season planning, uh it's a really good time to make a solid farm plan.

The first thing you've got to do is ideally figure out the issue and you know, nine times out of ten that is a metabolic issue.

The cows are down, they've got that sort of classic S shaped neck, often trying to stand, but they're just struggling a little

And that reflects the muscle weakness that comes with those metabolic issues.
