I think she is.
And I think this gets at one of my gripes about the book, which is... So she is really railing against the constraints that are put upon her as a woman, as a Christian, as a mother.
And...
She's right.
She's put in these boxes and she's forced to perform and it's impossible to be a person under these constraints.
Which is the part that I liked.
I think this book is getting at that irony that we all kind of live with the idea of performance and we're putting ourselves into boxes for a variety of reasons.
My gripe is then Natalie kind of not just puts herself in the box, it's how Natalie talks about Caleb and what is a good job for Caleb or what is not a good job for Caleb.
Because it's not to be like, think about the men, but it's like Natalie is...
reflecting those same types of gender norms and creating a more entrenched gender system overall that then ultimately hurts herself and again I keep saying I keep looping back and forth that may be the point of the book but
But am I bringing that to the book or is that just something that the book kind of stumbles over?
And I say that because the stuff with Caleb is played for jokes.
But she's like, you can't be a kindergarten teacher because that's not a job for men.
And that's played for a joke.
That's not played for part of the overall critique of like, okay, how are we creating these gender norms that then Natalie is railing against?
But before we get to spoilers, I want to ask, we've talked a lot about in this conversation so far, the modern storyline.
What do we think about the other half of the book, which is the flash of the past?
