I can't remember who came up with it.

And so I apologize to whoever it is.

The idea that like it's Obama's we and it's Bernie's them.

Like it's this Obama-esque coalition that's inclusive and that we're all a part of and we're stronger when we're all in it together.

And we're taking on the Bernie Sanders version of the villains who are opposing us.

I think the public tends to more loosely assign that term to men.

And I don't think it's particularly accurate.

I think there's, you know, a lot of candidates, like I think about Rebecca Cook running in Wisconsin, who meets all of those same criteria.

I think about even like Governor Sherrill across New Jersey, who I think is an example, not like necessarily the traditional populist, probably something of a kind of technocratic populist hybrid.

but has campaigned in that way and has governed in that way.

AOC as an example of this.

And I think the way people use the term populist oftentimes is they're kind of code switching.

If something's progressive, it's unelectable and populist becomes the electable version of progressive.

That's not my interpretation of it, but I think that that then contributes to like people are afraid if they start saying AOC is a populist, then it undercuts their arguments to keep her from running for president or to keep her from being president.

And then there's a kind of component of that.

I certainly can't speak for Donald Trump and I can't speak for Senator Sanders either.

But I think there is an element of it's the ways in which these things are written about and grouped and covered and the perception.

Someone like Jamal Bowman is a working class candidate who the stories written about him were oftentimes tended to leave out the fact that this is a working class outsider.

because it was more convenient to lean into other critical narratives than to embrace that.

Or, you know, Cori Bush, two members primaried by AIPAC last cycle.
