I do think, again, there's something going wrong with that number 10 media grid.
I did put this to someone and they were like, I think, Lewis, I'm afraid if you speak to number 10 at the moment, it almost feels like they've given up.
But this is a moment, if Starmer has any hope of surviving... I don't think he sounded like he'd given up.
Not him personally, but the sort of... If you were thinking, right, how do we keep the Prime Minister in office?
These aren't a bad set of foundations at all on which to try and build that.
But if you've got to do that, you've got to prove to the party at large and the parliamentary party...
that you can sing that song.
And this morning we had him just outside Downing Street doing that.
No sort of media event around it.
And they would have known what was coming.
And frankly, sending out the Chancellor, who was one of their worst media performers, talking about, you know, cuts in VAT and the price of biscuits.
Just on the perception gap that I mentioned, I mean, actually polling just published today by British Future, which is a think tank, shows that despite the sharp drop in migration, even over the past year, never mind the figures that we've just had, but even before that, 50% of the public said that it had increased significantly.
and expected it to rise again this year.
Fewer than one in five expected immigration to fall, which does tell you something about how poorly the government has managed to, and the Labour Party has managed to, communicate that message.
And whether it's Starmer, or whether it's Burnham, or whoever, and interesting that, as you say, Andy Burnham is suggesting that he will stick to Shabana Mahmood's immigration reforms.
Whoever it is, they've got to sell that message.
