I think the application of the law is down to the wood.

You cannot.

Allow the referees or the assistants or VAR or whoever it is to use a little bit of common sense in that application.
In understanding what's happening in the game.
It's not just because, in this case, Enzo Fernandes didn't touch the ball that the goal stands.
He's clearly affecting play.

But every time we have these controversies, you sit back, or whether it's PJ Amuel, as it was in the past, or no pro-ref, the defense was, well, this is the law.
And it's down to the letter of the law, and that's how the referees are asked to referee games, that's how they're judged.
You cannot just rely on the letter of the law because you cannot craft something that applies to every single situation that may arise.
