To be saintly usually involves massive acts and massive consequences.
And I wrote this poem about two men who did something very minute and very ordinary, which was they sold me a mattress and didn't make a big deal out of it.
This poem is for them.
Johnny and Mark, mattress salesman.
In the domain of soft places, those gathered collapse, in pairs, alone, and play at slumber.
Children again, and so relieved to abandon burdens for a few moments.
Legs akimbo, rolling on backs, lying on their side in their daily clothes.
A pause.
A job requirement to work in this domain is a slowness to speak, allowing tired people to take their time.
Oh Johnny, oh Mark, you who did not mistake us for brothers.
As I lie on the very firm mattress like a cadaver, Johnny congratulates us on the house.
He speedily corrects himself.
Home.
A silver band of medium thickness throbs on his finger.
He struggles to make eye contact, too.
He could have been talking to anyone, a smiley corporate solicitor or a hippie anarchist couple.
I forgive myself more each time I expect the worst and am greeted with an open palm.
In his unsteady gaze, I suddenly recall why I sought out this mattress, and whereupon we might eat ice cream, and speak at length, please God, for years.
