But what we're starting to learn is that exposure to smoke can have very serious effects years later.
Exposure to wildfire smoke increases risks of many types of cancer.
It increases risks of pregnancy problems.
Even there have been studies showing that it increases risks of dementia.
These risks are not just for people who live right near the fires.
These risks are seen even in people exposed to smoke that's coming from fires that are a thousand miles away.
And part of what makes the smoke so dangerous is it's not just vegetation burning.
These wildfires, they burn cars, they burn houses, they burn anything in their path.
So there are particles of metals and plastics and all kinds of really toxic things.
