Test team has been struggling.
They've lost, what, seven out of the last nine test matches.
I mean, this is really a long hangover from the Ashes.
England had a good chance to be competitive in the Ashes, sold themselves short there.
There's been obviously continuing problems since then with the loss to New Zealand and the off-field stories because the Ashes went so badly.
It left them
little wriggle room if things went wrong after that and obviously things went wrong against New Zealand not just a home defeat which is a very rare thing for England in a three-match series or more but then all the stories around the curfew after the Lords game Ben Stokes's retirement from international cricket in the middle of that game and then the way the team played self-indulgently on that fourth afternoon and fifth day which led to that series loss so added all together
On the back of what happened in the winter, it seemed pretty obvious that there was going to be some change.
So it's a mixed picture, really.
Some thrilling, fantastic cricket over the first 12 or 18 months and less good since then.
And change rarely happens when things are in, you know, ship-shaped condition.
And that's why change has come now.
and from where England were before him and Stokes, I think it would be wrong not to mention the way they played right at the start.
They were an absolute joy to watch.
